Atlas of Clinical Neurology

Perkin GD, Miller DC, Lan RJM, Patel MC, Hochberg FH, eds. Atlas of Clinical Neurology.  Expert CONSULT 2010, 456 pages, $199.00.

There are two competing textbooks on the market with exactly the same titles, Atlas of Clinical Neurology. One is edited by Dr. Rosenberg (2009), and this book is written by Drs. Perkin, Miller, Lane, Patel and Hochberg (2011). This hardcover book is 456 pages long and is abundantly filled (as an atlas should be) with patient pictures, images, pathology, tables, and diagrams. This is an excellent way of “seeing” patients whose images we read without actually having to see the patients. This is an excellent way of gaining insights into the clinical presentations and the associated studies that accompany each patient. From a purely imaging standpoint there is not much for a neuroradiologist to learn; however, that is not the benefit of this book to neuroradiology.

The introductory chapter contains, in addition to neuroimaging, graphic informatic on electrophysiology and electromyography. From there we are presented consecutive chapters on Motor Neuron and Peripheral Nerve Disease, Myopathies, Cerebrovascular Disease and Infarction, Cerebral Hemorrhage and Cerebrovascular Diseases, Dementia, Extra pyramidal Disorders, Intracranial tumors, Spinal Tumors (primarily intradural and intramedullary), Development and Familial Disorders (i.e. congenital defects), Pain Syndrome and Trauma (spine and head), Infections, Demyelinating Disorders, Spinal Diseases (degenerative disc disease, arthriditis, vascular lesions), Cranial Neuropathies, Systemic  diseases with Neurologic Manifestations, and Epilepsy. The majority of MR and CT images are of good quality, and the gross and histologic specimens, likewise, are instructive.

This textbook/atlas would be of value to any neuroradiologist. It nicely ties in imaging and clinical data.
