Waybill P, Brown D, eds. Patient Care in Vascular and Interventional Radiology. 2nd Ed and Study Guide Bundle. SIR Press; $100/$130 member/nonmember.
All too often, global patient care in interventional radiology takes a back seat to technical success of cases. Many different factors contribute to this, but one major factor is a lack of knowledge. Interventionalists and neurointerventionalists are by no means experts in management of diabetes, hypertension, or renal insufficiency, but the periprocedural management of these issues occurs on a daily basis. While complex or difficult-to-treat medical issues can and should be deferred to the primary care physician, increasingly, interventionalists are expected be able to manage these issues independently. Additionally, the proceduralist should have a good handle on how to manage the initial steps of urgent issues. Medical school and internship are often a distant memory for those doing fellowship and even more so for those already in practice.
That is where the book Patient Care in Vascular and Interventional Radiology and the associated Study Guide are essential. First published in 2010 and now available on Epub, the text consists of 28 concise and well-written chapters. Of these 28 chapters, 19 are germane to the neurointerventionalist. These chapters include topics such as preprocedural cardiac evaluation, management of periprocedural hypertension, sedation and analgesia in the interventional radiology suite, management of cardiopulmonary emergencies, vascular complications, and postprocedural management of renal failure. The associated study guide is a 92-page paperback book with questions and answers for each chapter. Additionally, CME credits are available. Each chapter and subsequent online exam available on the SIR website is approved for .75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits.
This book is concise and easy to read with a well-defined target audience, and is highly recommended for all neurointerventionalists in training and beyond.
