DI2_PedsNeuro-3D-250-x-312-1Drs. Barkovich, Koch, and Moore have updated their 2007 edition of Diagnostic Imaging: Pediatric Neuroradiology with this newly published (2015) second edition, which contains contributions from 34 authors. Even the cover has changed, from a schizencephaly to a Chiari malformation. While the size (number of pages) has not substantially increased and the designated sections remain the same, some new images appear, and increased emphasis is placed on understanding the developmental basis for many of the diseases encountered. By using the code that comes with every book, one can access the book’s content electronically and perform searches with it.

All radiologists, particularly neuroradiologists, are familiar with the extremely high standards of the set of books in Diagnostic Imaging. Naturally, considering the editors of this book, the quality and educational value remains at the highest value.

As in the prior editions there are 3 parts: Brain (8 sections), Head and Neck (4 sections), Spine (6 sections). The Brain section begins with 2-page discussion on the approach to brain malformations; in a similar manner, some sections begin with a description of the approach discussed therein, with imaging following this description. For example, in the sella/suprasellar section, an introduction describes the embryology, anatomy, and imaging protocols preceding the case material. Although not present before each section, this additional material adds significant value to the book. As needed, drawings help in the understanding of the disease or malformation in question; for example, in drawings related to the formation of brachial cleft cysts. The case material follows the format with which we are all familiar and includes Key Facts, Terminology, Imaging, Differential Diagnosis, Pathology, Clinical Issues, Diagnostic Check List, References, and illustrative cases, each of high quality and well described.

Every neuroradiologist should have direct access to either this edition or the first—preferably his/her own personal copy. We all have become so accustomed to these marvelous book in the Diagnostic Imaging series. These have made the practice of neuroradiology more accurate, enjoyable, and educational.
