Three recently received books should be of interest to not only neurosurgery residents and practicing neurosurgeons, but also to neuroradiologists who work closely with their neurosurgery colleagues. Two books, both third editions (Comprehensive Neurosurgery Board Review and Neurosurgery Oral Board Review), are aimed at those sitting for oral and written examinations. The former is nearly 700 pages in length, while the latter is a small, pocket-sized, softcover, 376-page book. Both (especially Comprehensive Neurosurgery Board Review), are replete with abundant neuroimaging, and what follow are the key points not only for diagnoses but also for treatment and follow-up. Sections on pathology and basic clinical anatomy make those volumes of even greater interest. There is value for radiologists to know and appreciate what cognitive facts graduating NSG residents are required to know.
The third book, Controversies in Skull Base Surgery, is useful for neuroradiologists who participate in tumor boards (particularly skull base surgery conference) and would therefore serve as a valuable reference. Along those lines, it is revealing to know what approaches, options, pitfalls, and complications may be discussed in any given tumor board conference. This book is a hardcover, 352-page volume edited by Drs. Little and Mooney, both from the Barrow Neurological Institute, and it covers virtually all the entities one encounters in daily imaging interpretations relative to the skull base.
While these 3 books may not be ones for personal purchase by a neuroradiologist, they would be properly housed in a neuroradiology or departmental library.
