Although not written primarily for those involved in neuroimaging, this 452-page book, in a number of sections, subsections, and chapters within each subsection, describes issues and concepts that a neuroradiologist would find interesting and important. There are 31 chapters written by 69 contributors from a range of specialties within neurosurgery and associated surgical disciplines. Starting with the assessment of head-injured patients, there are specific topics directly related to neuroradiology. Examples include recommendations/criteria for decompressive craniectomy, treatments for various types of intracranial hemorrhage and vascular injury (with appropriate imaging examples and accompanying case studies), various types of invasive intracranial pressure monitoring, duraplasty/cranioplasty and the materials used, neurosurgical considerations in facial fractures (again with case studies), skull fractures (depressed and growing), and management of different types of extra-axial hematomas and intra-axial contusions/hematomas. It is emphasized that these chapters include appropriate imaging. Some of the more difficult injury complications, such as CSF rhinorrhea, otorrhea/encephaloceles, basal encephaloceles, optic nerve injury, and cranial nerve injury treatment, are well described.
Throughout the book there are multiple images that illustrate the intraoperative field and the surgical manipulations. With the well-selected imaging, predominantly CT, this book is highly illustrated, which simplifies understanding of the surgical concepts and approaches to the head-injured patient.
On a daily basis, as one reads these types of images, it is helpful to have a clear understanding of the challenges and subsequent surgical options that our neurosurgical colleagues face. This book is recommended for inclusion in a radiology/neuroradiology sectional library.
