Hussain S, Latif SAA, Hall AD. Rapid Review of Radiology. Manson Publishing 2010, 352 pages, 500 illustrations, $69.95.
Adding to the plethora of books which serve as a quiz texts (case-based books) is this 352-page softcover textbook written by Drs. Hussain, Latif and Hall, with one chapter by Dr. Lyburn, all from the UK.
Six areas are covered: Chest, (27 cases) Abdominal (47 cases), CNS/Head and Neck (28 cases), MSK (45 cases), Pediatric (23 cases), and Breast (6 cases). Notably absent is Nuclear Medicine. Why there are a disportionate number of cases from section to section is not clear.
The neuro cases are straightforward, and the explanations of each are short and factual. The page following the imaging has sections containing subheadings of observations, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, discussion, practical tips, further management and with some cases further reading suggestions. In a few cases, auxiliary images showing differential diagnosis are included.
If the neuro section is any indication, the cases are typical of material shown and questions asked on the Board examinations since the images are classic for the various diagnoses. One book for a Department library to be shared amongst the fourth year residents would be more than sufficient.
