Gorelick PB, Testai FD, Hankey GJ, Wardlaw JM, eds. Hankey’s Clinical Neurology. 2nd Ed. CRC Press; 2014; 976 pgs; 698 illustrations; $159.95.
Hankey’s Clinical Neurology (2nd Edition) attempts to survey the field of neurology in a single 976–page hard cover book. The editors (Drs. Gorelick, Testai, Hankey, and Wardlaw) have solicited contributions from 46 authors and have produced a book that could be useful for those entering neurology as a resident, or for those in allied fields such as neuroradiology, where an overview is desired. The following topics are covered: neurologic diagnosis, disorders of consciousness, epilepsy, headache, vertigo, hyperkinetic movement disorders, developmental diseases, hereditary/metabolic diseases, brain/spine trauma, stroke/TIAs, infectious diseases, inflammatory disorders, tumors, degenerative diseases, acquired metabolic diseases, disorders of the CSF circulation, cranial neuropathies, diseases of the spinal cord, autonomic disorders, peripheral nerve diseases, neuromuscular joint disorders, muscle disorders, and sleep disorders. This is not an in-depth publication of the wide spectrum of neurologic diseases; rather, it would give the reader a broad appreciation of the field. Imaging is not a main focus of this text, but adequate examples of the major diseases are shown.
