Kirtane MV, de Souza CE, series eds. Devaiah AK, Marple BF, volume eds. Rhinology and Endoscopic Skull Base Surgery. Otorhinolaryngology—Head and Neck Series. Thieme; 2014; 286 pp; 173 illustrations; $129.99.
This 286-page hardcover book is written primarily for otolaryngologists who are involved in endoscopic sinus and base of skull surgery. While to many neuroradiologist this may seem to be a book in which they might not be interested, the opposite true. In an easily read text, with adequate imaging, the reader is taken through many clinical areas that are dealt with on a daily basis. Three sections are included in this book:
- Foundation of Rhinology and Endoscopic Skull Base Surgery (4 chapters)
- Rhinology and Paranasal Sinus Surgery (17 chapters)
- Endoscopic Skull Base Surgery and Related Skull Base Surgeons (15 chapters)
The range of pathology and its associated imaging and surgical/clinical management should be of interest to those who work closely with ENT surgeons. Topics ranging from fungal disease, acute chronic rhinosinusitis, surgical navigation, epistaxis, benign and malignant tumors of the sinuses, and skull base, among a host of other subjects, are covered. Because the book is written primarily with surgery in mind, many chapters offer nice reviews of anatomical approaches and potential complications of surgery. All of this is particularly important for neuroradiology because we can understand what key landmarks are critical to surgeon and what we need to carefully observe and include in a report.
