The core mission of ORCID is to provide an open registry where researchers
may obtain a unique and persistent identifier that can be linked with works as they are made public. The focus is on solving the problem of how authors can get appropriate credit for their contributions if they cannot be distinguished from one another: authors may have the same name as others, their names may change over the course of their career through marriage, researchers may publish in highly diverse fields that may not seem to connect back to one person. ORCID supplies an identifier that bundles a variety of biographic data including published articles and books, peer review activity, membership in working groups and associations, and employment and educational history.

AJNR encourages its authors to register for a free ORCID identifier and add it to their account in Manuscript Central. This is an easy process. Just sign into your account, go to the Corresponding Author Center, and use the drop-down menu under your name at the upper right to select “Email/Name.” This will show you the screen below where you can follow links to register with ORCID, add your existing identifier, or read more about the program, which has registered almost 800,000 people since October 2012.
