A strong knowledge of basic clinical neurology is a requisite for an effective neuroradiologist, not only when interpreting images but in consultations with colleagues in the neurosciences. The newly published second edition of Neuroanatomical Basis of Clinical Neurology covers all key areas of neuroanatomy (developmental, histological, area-by-area, peripheral neuroanatomy cranial nerves, spinal nerves, autonomic systems), neurotransmitters, specific systems (visual auditory, vestibular, olfactory, limbic), sensory motor systems, and extrapyramidal system. The drawings of anatomy and functional connections are excellent and allow for a clear understand of the anatomy and physiology. The anatomic correlations with functional neurology in particular are critical in performing functional MRI. Key points are highlighted in every chapter, and the brightly colored anatomic details are especially well done.
The few imaging studies included, however, particularly the angiograms, are of poor quality, and most are from a bygone era. If the author plans on a third edition, he should certainly enlist the assistance of one of the neuroradiologists in his institution to select proper studies. This is a minor criticism of an otherwise well done book. It is recommended for those involved in a high volume neuroradiology practice.
